# Adding a contact

> Add a client or lead to CoreHue by hand when they reach you by phone, DM or in person, and let CoreHue warn you if they're already in your contacts.

Most contacts arrive on their own, from your booking page and contact forms. Add someone by hand when they've reached you another way: a call, an Instagram DM, a chat at a wedding fair, or a referral from a friend.

## Adding someone

1. Go to **Contacts → Contacts** and click **Add contact**. On desktop you can also hover **Contacts** in the sidebar and click the plus.
2. Choose a **Contact type**: **Lead** if they haven't committed yet, **Client** if they have.
3. Enter their **Name**. It's the only required field.
4. Add their **Email**, **Phone** and **Company** if you have them.
5. Click **Create contact**.

CoreHue opens their page so you can get straight to work: send a message, create a proposal, or start a booking.

> **Add the email whenever you can**
A contact without an email can't be sent anything, so documents, galleries and messages have nowhere to go. If you only have a phone number today, add the email when you get it.

You can add an address later with **Edit** on their page. See [Editing a contact's details](/docs/contacts/editing-a-contact).

## If they're already in your contacts

As you type an email address, CoreHue checks it against your active contacts. If it finds a match, a **Possible matches** panel appears saying "You may already have this contact", with a **Use contact** button.

Use it, so that person's whole history stays on one page.

The check only looks at the email address, and only at active contacts. Two people with the same name and different emails won't be flagged, and neither will an archived contact. See [Dealing with duplicate contacts](/docs/contacts/duplicate-contacts).

## Adding a contact while you work

You don't have to stop what you're doing. In the new booking form, choose **Add Contact** at the bottom of the contact list, fill in their details, and they're selected as soon as you save.

## Lead or client?

Pick **Lead** for almost everyone you add by hand. CoreHue changes them to **Client** by itself the first time they book, pay or sign a contract.

Pick **Client** when they've clearly already worked with you, like a past client from before you used CoreHue. See [Leads vs clients](/docs/contacts/leads-and-clients).

## Field limits

| Field | Maximum |
| --- | --- |
| Name | 200 characters |
| Email | 320 characters |
| Phone | 50 characters |
| Company | 200 characters |

## Frequently asked questions

### Can I import a list of contacts?

Not at the moment. CoreHue doesn't have a contact import, so contacts are added one by one. Your booking page and contact forms will fill your list as new people get in touch.

### Is an email address required?

No, only the name is. But without an email you can't send that contact a message, document or gallery, so add one as soon as you can.

### Does adding a contact send them anything?

No. Creating a contact is silent. Nothing reaches them until you send a message, document or gallery.

### Can I add someone's address when I create them?

The address fields are on the edit form. Create the contact, then click **Edit** on their page to add their street, city, state, zip and country.
