Renaming, replacing and checking photo details

Use a photo's ⋯ menu to rename it, check its details, download it or replace it with a new edit. Replacing keeps the photo in the same position in its chapter.

Open a photo's menu

Hover over a photo on the Chapters tab and click its ⋯ button. You'll find:

  • Open, to see the photo full screen
  • Info, for the file and camera details
  • Set as cover
  • Move to… and Copy to… (see Moving, copying and deleting photos)
  • Download and Copy filename
  • Rename and Replace
  • Delete

Many of these are also available when you open a photo full screen.

Replace a photo with a new edit

  1. Open the photo's ⋯ menu and choose Replace.
  2. Pick the new file from your computer.

The new file takes the old photo's exact place in the chapter, and you'll see "Photo replaced". If the photo was the gallery cover, the new version becomes the cover. The new file follows the same rules as any upload: JPEG or PNG up to 100 MB, or RAW on Pro.

Your client sees the new version the next time they look. It's the cleanest way to handle "could you brighten this one?" after delivery.

Rename a photo

  1. Open the photo's ⋯ menu and choose Rename.
  2. Type the new name in Rename photo and save.

Two rules apply: the file extension has to stay the same (you'll see "Extension must remain .jpg" if it changes), and no two photos in the same chapter can share a name.

Clear names pay off when your client sends back favorites and you need to find those files in your editing software.

Copy a file name

Copy filename puts the photo's file name on your clipboard, ready to paste into a search in Lightroom or Capture One. To copy the names of a whole set of favorites at once, see Reviewing your client's favorites.

Download a copy

Download saves the photo to your computer. Your own downloads aren't affected by the gallery's download settings or your plan's download sizes.

Check a photo's details

Choose Info to open the Image Info panel. It shows whatever the file carries:

SectionDetails
FileName, dimensions, size, type, when it was uploaded and when it was taken
CameraMake, model, lens, lens make, serial
ExposureFocal length, aperture, shutter, ISO, mode, metering, flash, white balance
LocationCoordinates and altitude
ColorColor space
SoftwareThe app it was edited with

If a file has no camera data, the panel says so. Only you see this panel. It's a quick way to check a photo was exported in sRGB, or which body a frame came from.

Frequently asked questions

Does replacing a photo change its position?

No. When you use Replace, the new file sits exactly where the old photo was, in the same chapter.

Can I change a photo's file extension when renaming?

No. When you rename a photo, the extension has to match the file, so a .jpg stays a .jpg. To change the format, export the file again and use Replace.

Can my client see the Image Info details?

No. The Image Info panel with a photo's camera details is only in your editor, never in the client's gallery.

Why are Open, Info and Set as cover missing from a photo's menu?

Those options are missing when a photo hasn't finished processing. A photo that failed to process shows Try again in its menu instead. See When photos fail to process.
