Organizing photos into chapters
Chapters are the sections of a gallery: Getting ready, Ceremony, Portraits, Reception. They turn a long scroll into something your client can find their way around, and they're what your client uses to jump to the moments they care about most.
How chapters look to your client
Once your client scrolls past the cover, the chapter names sit in a strip that stays pinned to the top of the screen. Each chapter is its own page. If you've written a chapter description, it appears above that chapter's photos, and at the bottom of each chapter there's a link to the next one.
Videos in a chapter show above its photos. See How your clients watch videos.
Add a chapter
- On the Chapters tab, click the + next to Chapters in the sidebar. On a phone, open the sidebar first with the menu icon beside the chapter name.
- In New chapter, type a Chapter name. Add a description if you'd like a line of context above the photos.
- Choose Add chapter.
The new chapter opens, ready for photos. You can also create a chapter while moving or copying photos, from New chapter in that dialog.
Rename a chapter or change its description
Open the chapter's ⋯ menu in the sidebar and choose Edit. Change the name or description and save.
Reorder chapters
Drag a chapter by its grip handle, up or down the sidebar. The order you set is the order your client sees in the chapter strip.
Delete a chapter
- Open the chapter's ⋯ menu and choose Delete.
- Read the confirmation, which says how many items are in the chapter, then choose Delete chapter.
Every photo and video in the chapter is permanently removed, along with its activity. To keep the photos, move them to another chapter first, or hide the chapter instead of deleting it.
A gallery always needs at least one chapter, so Delete doesn't appear when only one is left.
The Featured chapter
Every new gallery starts with one chapter called Featured. It's an ordinary chapter, so rename it to whatever suits the gallery. Some photographers keep it as a highlights chapter at the top, with copies of their 30 or 40 best images, before the full story in the chapters that follow. Copies count toward storage again, so keep a highlights chapter tight.
Photo and video counts
The number on each chapter row is the total of its photos and videos. The chapter toolbar spells it out, for example "65 photos, 2 videos".
Hide or restrict a chapter
Three settings control who sees a chapter and what they can do with it:
- Hiding chapters from visitors keeps a chapter in your editor but out of the public gallery.
- Keeping chapters private to your client shows a chapter only to people who come in with the client password.
- Allowing downloads for some chapters only decides which chapters can be downloaded.
Naming chapters well
Short and literal works best. Getting ready, Ceremony, Family, Portraits and Reception tell your client exactly where to go. For a portrait or brand session, splitting by look or location (Studio, Outdoors, Details) does the same job.
Frequently asked questions
Do I have to use chapters?
No. Chapters are optional, and a short session can live happily in one chapter. Chapters earn their place once a gallery runs to a couple of hundred photos or covers different parts of a day.
Can the same photo be in two chapters?
Yes. Use Copy to… from the photo's menu to put the same photo in a second chapter. Each copy counts toward your storage, so copy thoughtfully. See Moving, copying and deleting photos.
Can I get a deleted chapter back?
No. Deleting a chapter permanently removes its photos and videos. If you might want a chapter later, hide it instead.
Can I move a video into a different chapter?
Yes. Gallery videos can be moved between chapters and galleries, though not copied. See Renaming, moving and deleting videos.
