Reordering and sorting photos

The first screen of a gallery sets the tone for everything after it. Sort a chapter in one click to get it roughly right, then drag your favorite frames to the top so your client opens on your best work.

Sort a whole chapter at once

  1. Open the chapter on the Chapters tab.
  2. Click the Sort photos icon in the chapter toolbar.
  3. Pick an order.

Newest first / Oldest firstWhen you uploaded them
Date taken ↓ / Date taken ↑When they were shot, from the camera data
Name A–Z / Name Z–AFile name
RandomA shuffled order

Sorting rearranges every photo in the chapter, not just the ones on screen, and the new order is saved. It's what your client sees.

There's no undo

Sorting replaces the chapter's current order. If you've arranged a chapter by hand, sorting it again will lose that arrangement.

Shooting with two bodies or a second shooter? Date taken only works well if the camera clocks matched. If they didn't, sort by Name after renaming on export, or fix the capture times in your editing software before exporting.

Drag photos into place

On a computer, drag any photo to a new spot. The other photos shift out of the way as you move, so you can see exactly where it'll land.

To move a group, select the photos first, then drag one of them. The whole selection moves together.

Dragging isn't available on phones and tablets. Use Sort photos there, or rearrange on a computer.

Select several photos

  • Hover over a photo and click the small box in its top-left corner.
  • Shift-click, Cmd-click (Mac) or Ctrl-click (Windows) to add photos to the selection.
  • On a computer, click an empty spot in the grid and drag a box across the photos you want.
  • On a phone or tablet, press and hold a photo to start selecting.

Once photos are selected, a bar appears at the bottom of the screen with Select all, move, copy, delete and clear selection. See Moving, copying and deleting photos.

Drag photos to another chapter

Drag your selection onto a chapter's name in the sidebar to move the photos into that chapter. It's the fastest way to split a long first upload into chapters.

Ordering videos

Videos have their own order, in the Videos section above the photos in each chapter. Drag a video to move it within that section. Sort photos doesn't change the order of videos. See Renaming, moving and deleting videos.

What your client sees

Your client sees each chapter in exactly the order you've set, starting from the top left. A strong first row makes a real difference: people who like the opening keep scrolling.

Frequently asked questions

Can I undo a sort?

No. Sort photos replaces the chapter's order and there's no undo. If you've hand-arranged a chapter, drag photos rather than sorting it again.

Why is Date taken putting photos in a strange order?

Date taken uses each file's camera data. Photos from cameras with different clock settings, or files that lost their camera data on export, can end up out of place.

Can I reorder photos on my phone?

Partly. You can use Sort photos on a phone, but dragging photos into a custom order needs a computer.

How do I reorder chapters?

Drag a chapter by its grip handle in the Chapters sidebar. See Organizing photos into chapters.
