Letting clients download videos

Clients often want the film on their own devices, to watch offline or post an edit of their own. Video downloads use the same switches as photos, so if photo downloads are already set up the way you like, video is too.

Available on Plus and Pro

Gallery video is included on the Plus and Pro plans. See CoreHue plans.

Which settings control video downloads

Everything is under the gallery's Settings → Downloads, shared with photos:

SettingWhat it does for video
Allow downloadsOff means no download button on any photo or video in the gallery.
Enable downloads forTurn a chapter off and its videos (and photos) can't be downloaded.
Download PINYour client enters the PIN before their first download, photo or video.

Your client is also asked for their email before their first download if they haven't already given it, so every download comes with a name attached.

Download sizes (Original, Web Size and so on) only apply to photos. Videos always download as an MP4 at the best quality your plan allows. See Choosing your download settings.

What your client downloads

PlusPro
FormatMP4MP4
Best qualityHD (1080p)Up to 4K

The download is never sharper than the file you uploaded, so a 1080p film downloads at 1080p on Pro too. The file keeps your original file name with .mp4 on the end, whatever title you gave the video.

The download is a high-quality MP4 that CoreHue makes from your upload, not a byte-for-byte copy of your master. For nearly every client that's exactly what they need. If a client needs your edit master (for a broadcast or a projector at a venue, say), send it to them yourself.

How your client downloads a video

  1. They click the download button on the video's card, or in the player.
  2. The first time, a panel asks for their email and the download PIN, but only what they haven't already given.
  3. The MP4 downloads through their browser.

Videos download one at a time. They aren't part of the Download gallery ZIP, and they can't be added to collections, so a whole-gallery download gives your client the photos only. It's worth reminding them to grab the film separately.

Right after you upload a video, or after you change your download settings, the button can show Preparing download for a short while as CoreHue gets the download file ready. It switches to a normal download button on its own.

Videos are big. Suggest your client downloads on Wi-Fi, and on a computer if they want to keep the file safe. Downloading videos from your gallery walks them through it, including saving to a phone.

Seeing who downloaded a video

Open the gallery's Activity tab, then Downloads → Single Video. Each row shows the video's file name, the email of the person who downloaded it, and the quality, such as Video · 1080p or Video · 4K. Your own downloads aren't recorded.

You'll also get a notification such as "Highlight film" was downloaded from Smith Wedding if the Downloads notification is on. See Seeing who downloaded what.

Frequently asked questions

Can I let clients download photos but not videos?

Not with a separate switch, because there's no video-only download setting. Put the videos in their own chapter and turn that chapter off under Enable downloads for. The photos in other chapters stay downloadable.

Can clients download all the videos at once?

No. Each gallery video downloads on its own, and the whole-gallery ZIP includes photos only.

Why does the download button say Preparing download?

Preparing download means CoreHue is still getting the video's download file ready, usually just after upload or after you've changed download settings. Ask your client to try again in a little while.

Can I download a video from my dashboard?

No. Video downloads are for your clients only, so keep your own copy of every film you deliver.

What happens to video downloads on the Free plan?

There are no video downloads on the Free plan. Free doesn't include video, so every video is restricted and hidden from clients altogether. See Restricted gallery videos.
