Question types
CoreHue questionnaires have thirteen item types: eleven that ask something and two that help you structure the form. Picking the right type makes answering quicker for your client and gives you answers you can rely on.
Text
| Type | Best for |
|---|---|
| Short text | One line: a name, a venue, a job title |
| Long text | Anything longer: "Tell me about your day", "Anything I should avoid photographing?" |
The size of the box sets expectations. A short box invites a short answer, which is often what you want.
Choices
| Type | Best for |
|---|---|
| Single choice | One answer from a list: session type, time of day, preferred style |
| Multiple choice | Any number of answers: which group shots they want, who's in the photos |
| Yes / No | A straight question: "Is there a reception?" |
Choice questions need at least two options and can hold up to 50. Use them wherever the possible answers are known. "Afternoon" is more useful than "probably after lunch but we're flexible".
Specific formats
| Type | What it does |
|---|---|
| Date | A date picker, so you never wonder whether 03/04 means March or April |
| Number | Counts: guests, hours, children |
| Checked as a valid email address before the form can be submitted | |
| Phone | Checked as a phone number |
| URL | Checked as a web link, handy for Pinterest boards or a venue website |
The checks on email, phone and URL catch typos before they reach you.
File upload
Your client can attach files: inspiration images, a floor plan, a timeline, a shot list. Choose what they can send under Accepted files:
| Setting | What your client can attach |
|---|---|
| All supported | Images, PDF, XLSX, CSV |
| Images only | JPEG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, GIF |
| Documents only | PDF, XLSX, CSV |
Max files sets how many files one question takes: 1, 2, 3, 5 or 10. It starts at 5.
| Limit | Amount |
|---|---|
| Size per file | 10 MB |
| Files per questionnaire | 20 |
| Total size per questionnaire | 50 MB |
The per-questionnaire limits matter if you have several upload questions, because your client can reach them before hitting any one question's limit. Uploaded files don't count towards your gallery storage. See How storage works.
Structure items
- Section heading breaks the form into parts, like Ceremony or Reception.
- Instruction text explains something without asking a question, like "The next few questions help me plan the group photos."
Neither asks anything, neither can be required, and neither can be shown or hidden with display logic. Both count towards the 100-item limit.
Picking well
- Use a choice question whenever the answers are known. Easier for them, more useful for you.
- Use required sparingly. Every required question is another reason to stop.
- Use helper text rather than long labels. A short question with a line of explanation reads better than a two-line question.
- Don't ask for a file when a sentence would do. Uploading from a phone takes far more effort than typing.
What your client sees
Each question appears with its label, any helper text below, and the right input: a text box, a list of options, a date picker or an upload area. Email, phone and URL answers are checked as they submit, with a clear message if something doesn't look right.
Frequently asked questions
Can I change a question's type after adding it?
Yes. Open the question in the questionnaire builder and pick a different type from the menu next to its name. Switching away from a choice question drops its options, so double-check the question afterwards.
Can clients upload videos?
No. Questionnaire file upload questions accept images, PDFs and spreadsheets only, up to 10 MB each. For larger files, ask your client to share a link with a URL question.
Which question types can show or hide other questions?
Any question that collects an answer can decide whether a later one appears. Section headings and instruction text can't, because they don't collect an answer. See Showing questions based on answers.
